An unusually early and powerful ice storm has paralyzed large parts of Oklahoma, killed hundreds of thousands of people and toppled thousands of trees. One of the heaviest bands of freezing rain made its way through the state and drove down the busy H.E. Bailey Turnpike.
The tornado expanded as it approached the border between the Canadian River and Cleveland County. When the tornado hit residential neighborhoods east of Western Avenue, the width of the EF4 with the most damage was 250 feet wide.
Some trees remained least damaged in Oklahoma City, including a downtown tree and a large tree on the east side of the Canadian River. Emergency management also reported that trees blocked part of Interstate 40 in Cleveland County and parts of I-40 in Tulsa County. Firefighters, police, firefighters and other emergency responders rushed to save as many people as possible from the damage caused by the tornado.
