Oklahoma Aquarium: Explore the wonders of the sea!

Apr 20, 2010

Open since 2003, the Oklahoma Aquarium operates with a mission of conservation through education. This mission is achieved through enlightening exhibits, educational programs and hands-on exhibits that help visitors gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the fish, animals and plants that can be found in the world’s oceans.

There are eight exhibit galleries at the Oklahoma Aquarium to explore, which feature thousands of fish and animals. In the Biodiversity exhibit, explore a variety of sponges, barnacles, sea stars and urchins in their natural habitat. In the Adaptation exhibit, learn about fish that breathe air and adapt to their changing environments. Then, over in the Fishes of Oklahoma exhibit, see an alligator snapping turtle that is more than 120 years old, blue catfish and much more.

Other exhibits include the Shark Adventure, Coral Room, Ocean Room, Jelly Fish exhibit and more. In the Oceans Room and Coral Reef visitors can explore the kelp and marsh forest then feed the stingray. The stingrays are slippery and smooth—many kids enjoy the hands on experience. Other fish in the Oceans Room include parrot fish, porcupine puffers, eels and more.

All of the fun is sure to work up a hunger, so stop by Corkie’s Deli and enjoy a variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, cookies and other refreshments. Then, visit the Aquarium Gift Shop to pick up a fantastic souvenir—chose from toys, cloths, books, games and more.

The Oklahoma Aquarium hosts several special events throughout the year. During the summer, children in kindergarten through fifth grade can take a week-long SeaCamp adventure. SeaCamp offers games, crafts and hands-on animal encounters. Then, in the fall—HallowMarine is a spooky fun carnival with pirates roaming the aquarium. Visit the website for a complete list of special events, educational programs and exhibits.
