National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum

Apr 16, 2010

Founded in 1955, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum offers America’s largest collection of Western art, artifacts, educational programs and research. With more than 10 million visitors each year, the Museum sees guests from around the world who are interesting in learning about the history of the West.

There are a dozen permanent collections to explore, starting with the American West gallery—filled with more than 2,000 paintings, sculptures and other art pieces. Other collections include the Western Performers Gallery, American Rodeo Gallery, Children’s Cowboy Corral, Native American Gallery and more. The Children’s Cowboy Corral is a fun interactive discovery area that is filled with western themed activities for the youngsters. Visitors can take self-guided tours around the museum and group guided tours are available with a reservation.

In an effort to preserve western heritage, the Museum offers many rotating exhibits and events throughout the year that showcase local and national celebrations of western culture.  The annual Chuck Wagon Gathering and the Children’s Festival offer family entertainment with live shows, food, games and other activities—every year at the end of May. Then, in October Rodeo Weekend features musical performances, lectures and a benefits auction to recognize individuals who have contributed to the rodeo industry.

While you’re visiting the museum, enjoy a meal at the Persimmon Hill restaurant. Decorated in an early prairie style décor of blue cornflowers and sunflowers, this restaurant offers a buffet of soups, salads, entrees and desserts for $10 per person. Also, stop by the museum store and show for your own western memorabilia including books, jewelry, clothing, art and more.

For information on upcoming events and exhibits at the museum, follow and Twitter and find the museum on Facebook and YouTube.
